The Dying Days

This was originally written back in July 2023 and it's somewhat telling that so much of it is still relevant. It's another piece that I have recently revisited and the last verse was added to bring things a little more up to date:

Remember the days when we'd dream of the stars
All we've got now are the kids in the bars and they're counting the scars of the help they've not had
Cut by the state, while the papers still scream of how Britain is great
And the usual suspects glorify hate and froth at the mouth at the dead on the beaches
They label the poor and disabled as leeches
Vilifying anyone with different features
Fighting gender wars and keeping playground scores
So the latest lie slips by unnoticed

A different shade of blue is dressed as opposition
Fiddling around while trying to find their position, silencing the slightest hint of sedition
Calling it tradition
Sitting on the fence while the papers feed you lies
And Murdoch's vultures peck at your eyes and make you blind to their lies, it's no surprise
To see the dead on the beaches, each new policy hits the furthest reaches
Of where we should be if we want more than this
Our rivers overflowing with shit and piss and the latest lie drifts by unnoticed

Every street corner mugger doesn't dress like a king, but the man with the crown will take everything
While the truth becomes a pipe dream for the poor, England's green and pleasant land was branded Johnson's whore
Eton's mess is blamed on every other creed or race
And they tell you not to trust a different coloured face
With Thatcher's ghost presiding over streets now paved with crap and we're spoon fed mass hysteria that's landed in our lap
The burglar's taking pity doesn't want your final pound because the banks and the lenders left nothing to be found
And the bravest of the boys piss on street corners with their toys to mark their place of birth
Russian money's flooding in but all the leaders cap your worth

And now humanity is a pipe dream for the poor
Fuck the nurses and the teachers, fuck protestors with new laws
Fuck the planet and the masses and the endless rising prices
Fires rage across the globe as nature lies in crisis
We're standing on the precipice that's up above extinction
And suddenly we're falling but the billionaires survive it with distinction
Sitting in their palaces and castles in the sky built from blood and sweat and tears that the poorest of us cried
Their bellies full and bloated as the hungry roam dead streets, still bestowing gratitude upon the biggest system cheats

In all the empty shops and pubs it's closing time
Small businesses were shackled by the lure of 'cheap online'
The artificial everything is coming for your jobs and it will tell you what to think
While it rips up your identity, steals your photographs and drives you to the brink
Genocide is dressed up as a nuclear distraction and social media is used to propagate a lack of action
Bowing down before the fossil-fuel-led surreptitious faction and hatred's gaining traction
Suffer little children, Epstein's secrets so extreme they hide in silent screams that massage one man's self-esteem
And we realise all along that free will was just a dream
